First quilt!

I was incredibly excited when I finally finished my very first “large” quilt earlier that summer. Looking back now, I still can’t believe how beautifully it turned out.

I actually started this quilt back in February 2011—and yes, I really was sewing that slowly at the time! It took me several months to complete, and I finally finished it in June.

The fabrics themselves had been waiting patiently on my shelves for almost a full year before I finally decided it was time to turn them into something special.

The idea was to create a soft baby play quilt together with a matching plush toy as a baptism gift. I wanted it to feel colorful, playful, and full of warmth, while still keeping a modern quilting style.

The plush toy was especially fun to make and ended up much larger than I originally expected. In the end, I think it paired perfectly with the quilt and made the entire gift feel even more personal and handmade.

For this project, I used fabrics from several collections, combining bright modern prints with solid Kona cottons to create a cheerful and vibrant look.

Fabric Collections Used

  • Michael Miller: Groovy Guitars, Large Pretty Petals, Large Leafy Stripe, Large Curly Swirl, and Zoology
  • Sherri Berry: Have a Sherri Berry Holiday
  • Alexander Henry: Briquetage Turquoise
  • Robert Kaufman Kona Cotton solids in Emerald and Turquoise

Sometimes the simplest projects end up becoming the most unique and meaningful ones.

I truly hope she is still enjoying it.
