Farmer's Wife Quilt week 22: quilt blocks Checkerboard and Cups & Saucers
Every time I choose the next pair of blocks for my Farmer's Wife Quilt Sampler, I'm reminded how much variety is hidden within traditional patchwork.
Some blocks are wonderfully simple, relying on repetition and contrast to create their beauty. Others are more intricate, using geometry to suggest movement and direction. That's exactly what makes sampler quilts so enjoyable—no two blocks feel quite the same.
This week I completed Block 19 – Checkerboard and Block 25 – Cups & Saucers, two classic quilt blocks that couldn't be more different in appearance, yet complement each other beautifully.
Block 19: Checkerboard
It doesn't get much more iconic than a checkerboard pattern.
At first glance, this block appears incredibly simple, but that's exactly where its beauty lies. The Checkerboard block depends almost entirely on fabric placement and value contrast. Without a strong distinction between light and dark fabrics, the pattern quickly loses its impact.
For this block, I enjoyed selecting fabrics that would create a crisp, balanced design while still fitting naturally into the growing collection of Farmer's Wife blocks. It's a reminder that even the simplest traditional quilt blocks deserve thoughtful fabric choices.
Sometimes simplicity is the greatest design challenge.
If you'd like to make this block yourself, you're in luck! The Checkerboard block is also featured in my video tutorial series in my channel, where I share step-by-step video tutorials for traditional quilt blocks. Whether you're new to quilting or simply looking for a visual guide, you can follow along with the tutorial here: Checkerboard Quilt Block Video Tutorial.
Block 25: Cups & Saucers
Cups & Saucers has a completely different personality.
The block feels playful and full of movement, almost as if the pieces are gently rotating around the center. Traditional quilt block names often spark the imagination, and this is certainly one of my favorites. While everyone may see something slightly different, the name gives the block a charming sense of familiarity.
Watching the design emerge piece by piece is one of the most satisfying parts of the process.
Another pair of blocks complete
With Checkerboard and Cups & Saucers finished, another small chapter of this quilt is complete.
The collection continues to grow, block by block, and it's becoming more exciting to imagine how all of these individual designs will come together in the finished quilt.
Until then, I'll simply enjoy making the next set of blocks.
