Friendship star
Easy stars are always a favorite for beginner quilters. The Friendship Star quilt block has all the elements needed to practice half square triangles, piecing, matching points, ironing, and more.
I always like to teach using this block as my first example (…well maybe also the Pinwheel quilt block).
Cutting Instructions for the Friendship Star Quilt Block
This block is also used in the Farmer's Wife Quilt Sampler, and it looks beautiful using feedsack reproduction fabrics. You really can’t go wrong—use a light and a dark fabric for a classic look.
Start by making a test block before cutting pieces for the whole quilt. It will make you more confident as you continue.
Remember: FINISHED SIZE means the size it will be in a completed quilt. The measurements given already include the ¼ inch seam allowance.
| Finished Block size | Cut 2 squares (light & dark) | Cut 5 squares (light) |
| 3'' | 1-7/8'' | 1.5'' |
| 6'' | 2-7/8'' | 2.5'' |
| 9'' | 3-7/8'' | 3.5'' |
| 12'' | 4-7/8'' | 4.5'' |
Block Variations
By changing the layout of your half square triangles and adding a color or two, you can create many variations of this block using the same technique. Some variations may require separate tutorials as they introduce additional elements.
