Farmer’s Wife QAL week 12: Contrary Wife & Ribbons quilt blocks

It has been quite a long time since I last worked on my Farmer’s Wife quilt blocks, and I truly missed this creative routine.

Between the uncertainty of the Greek financial crisis, the final stages of pregnancy, and the intense heat of July, it has been difficult to focus on quilting—or on much of anything, really. I’ve tried to find small moments of inspiration, but my mind has been easily distracted.

So for now, I’ve made a simple promise to myself: to slow down, to enjoy these last quiet days with my husband, and to let go of the pressure to constantly produce, post, or create. Sometimes stepping back is the only way to move forward again.

Even with these challenges, I managed to return to my sewing table for this week’s Farmer’s Wife Quilt Along, and that alone felt like a small but meaningful step.

For this week, I worked on no. 21 Contrary Wife and no. 74 Ribbons, using foundation paper piecing and my favorite Lecien fabrics.

Farmer’s Wife Quilt Blocks: Contrary Wife & Ribbons

The Contrary Wife quilt block has a strong, structured design with beautiful symmetry. It’s one of those blocks where precision really matters, and paper piecing helps keep everything sharp and balanced.

The Ribbons quilt block feels softer and more fluid in comparison, with a sense of movement created through the arrangement of the pieces. It’s always interesting to see how different blocks bring such different energy to the quilt.

Even in a difficult period, returning to these small creative moments feels grounding.

Here is how the blocks turned out:

Have a peaceful and relaxing weekend.
