Farmer’s Wife QAL week 13: Spider Legs & Calico Puzzle quilt blocks
I had almost forgotten how much I truly enjoy making the Farmer’s Wife quilt blocks.
With pregnancy and then the arrival of our baby, the Quilt Along naturally moved down my list of priorities—which was completely expected. But over the past week, I found some quiet evening time and dedicated almost four nights to foundation paper piecing, and it instantly reminded me why I love this process so much.
Seeing all the beautiful 1930s-inspired blocks on Instagram and Facebook has also been incredibly motivating. I finally gave in and bought the 1930s Farmer’s Wife book, and I’m planning to experiment with English Paper Piecing (EPP) for some of the blocks instead of foundation paper piecing. I’m really curious to see how different the experience will be.
For this week’s Farmer’s Wife Quilt Along, I worked on no. 82 Spider Legs and no. 16 Calico Puzzle, using foundation paper piecing and my favorite Lecien fabrics.
Farmer’s Wife Quilt Blocks: Spider Legs & Calico Puzzle
The Spider Legs quilt block was definitely more intricate, mainly because of the very small pieces. However, foundation paper piecing made the process much more manageable than I initially expected, helping keep everything precise and aligned.
The Calico Puzzle quilt block, on the other hand, is much more straightforward. It’s a clean and simple design, with no surprises, and it can easily be pieced even without paper piecing—making it a great option for beginners as well.
It feels really good to be back into this rhythm again.
Here is how the blocks turned out:
