Farmer’s Wife Quilt week 16: Broken Sugar Bowl & Buzzard’s Roost quilt blocks
It really feels like I’m finally back on track with this beautiful Farmer’s Wife Quilt Along. These quilt blocks can become incredibly addictive—especially when using foundation paper piecing. There’s something so satisfying about watching all the tiny pieces come together into a perfectly precise block.
One of the things I love most about the Farmer’s Wife community is that everyone follows their own pace. Some quilters started years ago, others are just beginning now, and yet we can all continue sharing inspiration through Instagram, Flickr, and quilting groups online.
If you are looking for more Farmer’s Wife quilt inspiration on Instagram, the main hashtag is:
#farmerswifequilt
Although many quilters from the newer 1930s Farmer’s Wife book are now using the same hashtag, most of the photos still come from the original Quilt Along.
For this week’s Farmer’s Wife Quilt Along, I made no. 12 Broken Sugar Bowl and no. 15 Buzzard’s Roost, using foundation paper piecing, mostly with Lecien fabrics and one fabric from a Riley Blake collection.
Farmer’s Wife Quilt Blocks: Broken Sugar Bowl & Buzzard’s Roost
no. 12 Broken Sugar Bowl
The Broken Sugar Bowl quilt block was a very enjoyable and relatively easy block to piece. I absolutely love this fabric combination, and I think the design really allows the prints to stand out beautifully.
While foundation paper piecing worked very well here, this is also a block that would probably be quite straightforward using traditional rotary cutting methods.
no. 15 Buzzard’s Roost
The Buzzard’s Roost quilt block quickly became one of my favorites from the past few weeks. It came together very smoothly with foundation paper piecing and has such a strong geometric look.
I still have no idea what the name actually means, though!
Here is how the blocks turned out:
I’ve also already started experimenting with blocks from the Farmer’s Wife 1930s Sampler Quilt book, which I bought last week. Hopefully I’ll be able to share some of those blocks very soon.

Have a beautiful and creative week!
