Farmer’s Wife 1930's Quilt week 1: Addie & Aunt quilt blocks (English Paper Piecing)
For the original Farmer’s Wife Quilt Along, I pieced all of my blocks using Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP). But this time, I decided to challenge myself and make the entire quilt using English Paper Piecing (EPP) instead.
I’ve wanted to improve my EPP technique for a while, and this project feels like the perfect opportunity. I also bought a glue pen for glue basting the pieces, and honestly—it has made the whole process so relaxing and enjoyable.
For this quilt, I’ll mainly be using reproduction fabrics, which finally have the perfect project to shine in. Most of my fabrics come from the beautiful 30’s Playtime collection by Chloe’s Closet for Moda Fabrics, mixed with a few treasured fat quarters from other collections.
Farmer’s Wife 1930s Quilt Blocks: Addie & Aunt
My first two blocks for the Farmer’s Wife 1930s Sew Along are no. 1 Addie and no. 8 Aunt.
no. 1 Addie
The Addie quilt block immediately became my favorite so far. I absolutely adore these fabrics together, and the soft 1930s-inspired colors work beautifully with the delicate geometry of the block.
This block reminded me why I wanted to start this quilt in the first place.
Technique: English Paper Piecing
Fabrics: All fabrics from the collection 30’s Playtime by Chloe’s Closet for Moda Fabrics.
no. 8 Aunt
The Aunt quilt block was actually easier to piece than I expected, but since it was my very first EPP block for this project, it came out slightly wonkier than I would have liked.
Still, I think it’s part of the charm of learning a new technique, and I already feel more confident moving forward.
Technique: English Paper Piecing
Fabrics: Floral fabric from the collection 30’s Playtime by Chloe’s Closet (Moda Fabrics) and blue fabric from Adventures With Alice by Darlene Zimmerman (Robert Kaufman Fabrics).
