Northwind quilt block
The Northwind quilt block includes half square triangles and bias edge piecing, but it is still very approachable for a confident beginner. It’s also a great way to learn how to handle those tricky bias edges.
Making a full quilt with the Northwind block creates a surprisingly beautiful effect. It works especially well with ombré fabrics, where the movement of color really enhances the design.
Cutting Instructions for the Northwind quilt block
Be careful when sub-cutting squares on the diagonal, as the bias edges can stretch easily. When assembling the larger triangles, mark the center points of each piece, match them carefully, and sew slowly for accuracy.
Always remember FINISHED SIZE means the size it will be in a completed quilt. The measurements already include the ¼ inch seam allowance.
*SQ = Square/Squares
| Finished Size | 3 SQ (Dark & Light) – subcut diagonally | 1 SQ (Dark & Light) – subcut diagonally |
| 6 inches | 2-7/8 inches | 4-7/8 inches |
| 9 inches | 3-7/8 inches | 6-7/8 inches |
| 12 inches | 4-7/8 inches | 8-7/8 inches |
