Star Sashing baby quilt
Another baby quilt that I originally designed and pieced back in 2015… and then life happened. More specifically: the baby happened. I think poor Orestis gets blamed for every unfinished quilt around here, but honestly, motherhood completely changed my sewing rhythm.
Even though it took me forever to finally finish this quilt, I still absolutely adore these fabrics and those tiny aqua stars.
Quilt Process
Machine pieced, quilted and hand-bound by me.
Quilt dimensions: 45” x 46” (114 x 117 cm)
Quilt pattern: Original design
Materials Used
All fabrics are 100% organic cotton.
Quilt front: Mod Squad by Dan Stiles (Birch Fabrics), solid white cotton, Kona Cotton Robin Egg, and navy polka dot fabric.
Backing: A combination of solid white cotton and leftover fat quarters from the quilt front.
Binding: Navy striped premium cotton.
Batting: 100% cotton.
Date made: 27.4.2015 – 5.12.2016
For the quilting, I used a simple stitch-in-the-ditch method. Lately I have really started appreciating this style of quilting because it is fast, clean and gives a beautifully subtle finish without overwhelming the piecing.
Now let’s talk honestly about something: I really hate sashing quilt blocks.
If I can avoid sashing entirely, I absolutely will. I naturally gravitate toward quilt designs that feel more open and uninterrupted. But this particular star sashing design had been sitting on my Pinterest inspiration board for ages and eventually I just had to make my own version.
So now I’m curious: am I the only one who dislikes sewing sashing?
Thank you so much for reading and following along. Have a beautiful weekend — and don’t forget to stop by my Instagram account @zarkadia to see what I’m currently working on (or procrastinating on).
