A little bit of history

via "Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns"

The Card Trick quilt block was designed in the 1970s by Jeff Gutcheon and published in McCall's. Beth and Jeffrey Gutcheon were influential quilt authors, and their work helped shape modern quilting techniques.

Their Quilt Design Workbook was considered groundbreaking, introducing concepts like chain piecing and innovative block designs such as the Card Trick. At the time, these ideas represented a major evolution beyond traditional quilting styles.
