Checkerboard quilt block

The classic 16 Patch quilt block—also known as the Checkerboard quilt block—is a no-brainer! It’s one of the easiest quilt blocks out there, and perfect for beginners.

I especially love using it with tiny 1.5-inch strips. You can easily make a full quilt in just one weekend!

Cutting Instructions for the Checkerboard quilt block

You can create this block in almost any size using a simple formula:

  • A = Finished Block Size ÷ 4 + 0.5 inches
  • B = (A × 2) + 0.5 inches
  • Strip size = A × B

Use these formulas to calculate your strip dimensions based on your desired finished block size.

Always remember: FINISHED SIZE refers to the size within the completed quilt. All measurements already include the ¼ inch seam allowance.

*SQ = Square/Squares

Finished Size Strip Size (A × B)
4 inches 1.5" × 3.5"
8 inches 2.5" × 5.5"
10 inches 3" × 6.5"
16 inches 4.5" × 9.5"

Cut 4 strips from both dark and light fabric.
