Union square quilt block

Making this block was so fun that I decided to create a whole new quilt with it, honoring the history behind it. The geometry and harmony of this design are simply fascinating.

There are many variations that share the same name, but here I am focusing on the original Union Square block.

A little bit of history

via Q is for Quilter

A variation of the "saw-tooth" (sometimes linked to the Bear Paw design), this beautiful quilt was traditionally made for a bride-to-be and named "Union Square" during a time of strong political sentiment surrounding Abraham Lincoln and the preservation of the Union.

Cutting Instructions for the Union Square quilt block

Remember: FINISHED SIZE refers to the size the block will be within the completed quilt. All measurements already include the ¼ inch seam allowance.

You should be especially accurate when cutting your pieces, as this method assumes no trimming (squaring up) after sewing Half Square Triangles.

Finished Size 8 SQs (main & background) 1 SQ (main) 2 SQs main (cut in half) 2 SQs background (cut in half) 4 SQs background
