WIP Wednesday: Butterfly quilt
Improvising with Square in Square Blocks
I finished this quilt top quite a while ago, but somehow I completely forgot to post about it. Lately I have so many projects moving around my sewing space that some things quietly disappear into piles of fabric before I even photograph them properly.
This quilt was a very spontaneous project. I started experimenting with the classic Square in Square block and quickly became obsessed with the possibilities. I love how geometric and modern this traditional block can look depending on fabric placement and color combinations.
For this quilt I combined several of my favorite Kona Cotton solids with fabrics from the beautiful Dream On collection. The bright colors worked surprisingly well together and gave the quilt a playful and cheerful feeling. Sometimes the best quilts happen without too much planning.
I still enjoy these kinds of improvisational projects the most. They allow me to experiment freely with color and composition without worrying too much about perfection. Quilting becomes much more relaxing when I let the fabrics guide the final design.
