Farmer’s Wife 1930's Quilt week 3: Hope & Alice quilt blocks (EPP)
I’ve definitely been on a quilting streak these past few weeks—but unfortunately not for my Farmer’s Wife blocks. Those have been slightly neglected while I focus on finishing several custom orders and projects that needed immediate attention.
Still, after a few late nights of slow and relaxing stitching, I finally managed to complete two more blocks from the beautiful Farmer’s Wife 1930s Sampler Quilt .
This week’s blocks are no. 43 Hope and no. 3 Alice, both made using English Paper Piecing (EPP) and my growing collection of favorite reproduction fabrics.
Farmer’s Wife 1930s Quilt Blocks: Hope & Alice
no. 43 Hope
The Hope quilt block was such a pleasant surprise to sew. Even though the design includes inset seams—which can sometimes feel intimidating—with English Paper Piecing they become much easier to manage.
The construction felt smooth and enjoyable from start to finish, and I absolutely love how these fabrics work together in this block.
Technique: English Paper Piecing
Fabrics: Purple and white fabrics from the collection 30’s Playtime by Chloe’s Closet (Moda Fabrics) and orange fabric from Adventures With Alice by Darlene Zimmerman (Robert Kaufman Fabrics).
no. 3 Alice
The Alice quilt block was a completely different experience! This one took forever to finish. I spent nearly two weeks slowly hand-sewing all those tiny pieces together.
Even though the block was time-consuming, it was surprisingly manageable thanks to EPP. And honestly, despite the effort, I still absolutely love the final result.
Technique: English Paper Piecing
Fabrics: Fabrics from the collection 30’s Playtime by Chloe’s Closet (Moda Fabrics) combined with Kona Cotton White by Robert Kaufman Fabrics.
Projects like this remind me why I enjoy hand piecing so much. It slows everything down and makes the process itself feel just as important as the finished quilt.
Have a lovely and creative day!
