Scot’s Plaid Baby quilt

Well yes… I finally dove into the Cotton + Steel pool and honestly? It felt soooo good.

If you haven’t yet purchased at least one fat quarter from this company, please do yourself a favor and try one. Even if modern fabrics are not your style. Even if you think you’ll never use them. Even if you just want to stare at them.

There is simply something different about these fabrics. The colors are unbelievably vibrant and somehow feel both playful and sophisticated at the same time. I honestly cannot describe them properly — I’m still overwhelmed every time I look at this quilt.

For this quilt I paired the Cotton + Steel basics with a deep navy solid cotton, and I think the contrast made the entire quilt much more striking and modern.

Quilt Process

Machine pieced, quilted and hand-bound by me.

Quilt dimensions: 39” x 39” (100 x 100 cm)

Quilt pattern: Original design using the traditional Scot’s Plaid quilt block. You can find full instructions for making the block in the tutorial linked above.

Materials Used

All materials are 100% cotton.

Quilt front: Basics fabric line by Cotton + Steel, combined with navy solid cotton.

Backing: A combination of solid navy cotton and leftover fat quarters from the quilt front.

Binding: Navy striped premium cotton.

Batting: 100% cotton.

Date made: 3.10.2016 – 9.12.2016

Oh my… the back of this quilt.

I am absolutely in love with it. The entire backing was completely improvised and, for once, I resisted calculating every single measurement beforehand. For me, that was basically a miracle. I am such a control freak when it comes to quilting.

I think this year I really want to push myself outside my comfort zone and experiment more with improvisational quilting. So if you have any favorite books or resources about improv quilting, please send recommendations my way!

For the quilting itself, I used stitch-in-the-ditch quilting, which gave the quilt a slightly puffier finish than my usual quilts. And honestly, I love how it makes the fabrics stand out even more.

Thank you so much for reading. Have a wonderful weekend, and don’t forget to stop by my Instagram account @zarkadia to see what I’m currently working on — and maybe say hi once in a while.
