Rotating quilt, an orange peels quilt- WIP

An Orange Peels Quilt – Pt. 1

I started this Orange Peels quilt during our summer vacations, when I desperately needed a project that I could easily carry around with me. After experimenting with English Paper Piecing, I wanted a completely different challenge, and appliqué was the next technique on my quilting bucket list.

The original motivation was simple: I wanted something I could sew while sitting on the beach, while the baby was sleeping, or during quiet summer evenings.

One of the easiest and most beginner-friendly appliqué shapes is the classic Orange Peel, so naturally that became my starting point.

As many quilters already know, appliqué quilts require a lot of preparation before the actual sewing begins. I found a free Orange Peel template online and started preparing my blocks before our vacations: marking fabrics, cutting orange peels, and continuously pulling more and more fabrics from my stash.

I had previously purchased a large amount of this purple solid cotton, and to my surprise it worked beautifully with so many of my printed fabrics. For this quilt I mainly pulled fabrics from:

  • Flea Market Fancy
  • Several Art Gallery Fabrics collections
  • Amy Butler fabrics
  • Various fat quarters and scraps that never seemed to fit into other projects

Some Interesting Quilt Stats

  • The quilt will contain 56 twelve-inch blocks, for a total of 224 six-inch orange peel shapes.
  • I was able to cut 12 orange peels from each fat quarter, which meant almost zero fabric waste. Only tiny scraps were left behind.

I’ll be sharing more details and progress about this quilt as soon as I finish the quilt top, which I’m really hoping will happen before the end of this quarter.

This Week’s Statistics

  • Swoon quilt : all blocks completed but still not pieced together.
  • By the Sea quilt : basted and ready for quilting.
  • Farmer’s Wife Quilt : absolutely no progress.
  • Farmer’s Wife 1930’s Quilt : still no progress.
  • Vintage embroidery quilt: I really need to write about this project soon so I can finally commit to making it. It has been sitting on my to-do list for way too long.
  • Square quilts: I already have three quilt tops pieced and waiting patiently for their turn on the blog.
