Broken Wheel quilt block


I don't know about you, but this block has made my day. Back when I was a rookie quilter, I thought this was a really complex quilt block… but the Broken Wheel quilt block is actually a piece of cake!

Alternative names for the Broken Wheel quilt block include: Block Circle, Johnnie Around the Corner, Single Wedding Ring, Squirrel in a Cage, Wheel.

Block variations

Most quilts shown here use a variation of this block, often placing the main fabric in the center square. This simple adjustment creates very different visual effects.

The Wedding Ring quilt block also appears in the Farmer's Wife Quilt series as the Single Wedding Star.
